Thermax to get ASME certification for nuclear business

Thermax, leading manufacturer of heat exchanger and manufacturing units is in talks with Nuclear Power Corp Ltd. It is likely that Thermax will get certification from ASME shortly to equip itself to manufacture balance of plant packages for nuclear plant. NPCIL is interested to develop indigenous players for fabrication of equipment and nuclear components. It will help in localization of technology as well it bring down the costs.

IOCL /NALCO to foray into nuclear power

Indian Oil Corp, which has already invested in wind power is planning to venture into nuclear power. It has received an in-principle approval from its board to sign an agreement with Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL). It may invest from 26% to 49% in NPCIL projects of Kakrapar, Kudankulam or Jaitapur plant in Maharashtra. It may be noted, the company has also joined hands with Tata Power to set up thermal plants. The above moves will make IOCL, an integrated energy company. NALCO another public sector company is also in talks with NPCIL to invest in nuclear projects. While NALCO and IOCL may be just investors, NTPC has signed a deal with NPCIL to become a nuclear power player in its own right.

BHEL, Bharat Forge and Areva to set up facility for nuclear forgings


BHEL, Bharat Forge and French energy major Areva will join hands to set up nuclear forging facility in India.  With BHEL in the venture, the company can manufacture nuclear forgings apart from heavy stainless steel forgings. Currently, forgings are well in demand particularly forgings for nuclear facility are imported. The new venture is expected to become operation by 2012 and they are currently scouting for a suitable location. With India’s forging capacity at 12.5 metric tonnes, these partners are keen to make use of domestic market as well as exports.

India plans to add 1660 MW of nuclear power capacity this year


India plans to commission 4 nuclear plants, which were in various stages this year by speeding up. The Indo-US nuclear deal and subsequent agreements with various countries and IAEA will help to speeden things up. Two units in Rajasthan, one in Kudankulam  and one in Kaiga will go on stream this year.
