Nuclear Fuel Complex to set up fuel fabrication facility in Kota

Nuclear Fuel Complex, is planning to set up two major fuel fabrication facilities to supply nuclear fuel to atomic power stations. The project involves setting up of a 500-tonne/year fabrication facility at Kota in Rajasthan, with an investment of Rs. 16,000 million. It will also have a 65-tonne/year Zircalloy plant. Apart from this, NFC also plans to set up a 1,250-tonne/year zircalloy facility for which it is scouting for site in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

Nuclear Fuel Complex to produce Niobhat - high temperature alloy

Nuclear Fuel Complex has signed up an MoU with Vikram Sarabhai Centre, Thiruvananthapuram for manufacture of Niobium. The key material when combined with Hafnium it will produce an alloy which can withstand high temperature and is widely applied in space vehicle nozzles, nuclear reactor coolant channels. The project is funded by ISRO to the tune of Rs.300 million. NFC also has the technology to produce zirconium. It has tied up with C-Met and Midhani to produce Niobhat, the final alloy at Hyderabad NFC.

Tummalapalle Uranium mines to get commissioned by 2010

Atomic Energy Commission which was setting up a manufacturing plant in Tummalapalle in Andhra Pradesh. The project envisaged is around 40,000 tonnes tpa of uranium will use latest alkaline leaching process. Besides this, Uranium Corp of India Ltd is also setting up uranium plants at Lambapur which is closer to uranium mines at Lambapur-Peddagattu uranium mining region and processing plant at Seripalle 52 kms away from main site.

Uranium mining will start in Meghalaya this year

Uranium Corp of India Ltd is planning to set up a open cast mine at Domiasiat area and has initiated process for a EIA study /environment management plan report and detailed project report. It may be noted, approximately 16% of uranium reserves of India are found at Domiasiat and Wakhyn of Meghalaya with estimated deposits of 13500 tonnes. Many NGO who have opposed the project have turned around and come on board for the project and progress is likely to be seen by end of 2010.
