International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Council approves nuclear fusion project schedule and cost

International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Council which met on July 2010 has approved the baseline cost and overall schedule of the project. The nuclear fusion project is jointly set up by Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the US to generate power using nuclear fusion (as it happens in sun). Such an attempt if ends in success will result in generation of inexhaustible source of power and the project cost has gone up from Euro 5.9 billion in 2006 to Euro 15 billion . India on its part will be involved which has a share of 9% in costs. The project is likely to be built with contributions from countries in form of components and services.

Haripur Nuclear Energy Park mooted by Atomic Energy Commission

Project Location : Haripur, Midnapore district, West Bengal

Atomic Energy Commission has selected Haripur in Midnapore district in West Bengal as one of the 5 coastal location to set up a nuclear power plant. To meet the objective of nuclear energy programme and vision 2020, it plans to add 40000 MGWT of nuclear energy by using indigenous and imported nuclear fuel. It may be noted, National Fishworkers Forum in Haripur and a section of Trinamul Congress are against the project.

The project have been scrapped by the Trinamool Congress government which has come to power in 2011.

NPCIL and Areva to set up the Jaitapur nuclear power plant

Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPICL) is in talks with Areva, the French energy major to build the Jaitapur nuclear plant which will have 2x1650 MW European Pressurized Reactors. It is working on a business model similar to Kudankulam plant, where there will be clear demarcation for the contractor work , training and commissioning process. NCIPL has already acquired the required land which can house 6 reactors. Both the NPICL and Areva are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the Nuclear Liability Bill.

DAE plans 2 nuclear parks Kovvada and Nizampatnam in Andhra Pradesh

Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) as a part of strategic initiative is planning five nuclear parks in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra , Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Andhra Pradesh, which is rich in uranium reserves is to have 2 nuclear parks which will have a capacity of 10000 MW in Kovvada in Srikakulam and in Nizampatnam. The Kovvada park will have 6 indigenous reactors. Andhra Pradesh have uranium reserve estimated at 60000 tonnes. It may be noted, Nuclear Fuel Complex is also located here.
