NPCIL is expanding its Kakrapar Nuclear Plant

Project Location : Kakrapar, Rajasthan

Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd is expanding its Kakrapar Atomic Power station by adding two nuclear reactors of 700 MW each. It has awarded one of the largest kind of contract worth Rs.8440 million to Larsen & Toubro. The scope of work includes heavy water upgrading plant, reactor building, auxiliary buildings, structural steel works etc., The nuclear reactors will be based on thermal heavy water technology and is expected to be commissioned in the next 5 years.

Nuclear Power Corporation places order for 4 new steam turbine for Kakrapar Atomic Project


Nuclear Power Corporation has placed order with BHEL for supply of 4 steam turbines for its Kakrapar Atomic project in Gujarat. The contract worth of Rs.3450 million is for design, testing, supply of steam generators using indigenous BHEL technology but conforming to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)for country’s first 700 MWe reactors. BHEL has so far supplied 32  steam generators for 8 220 MWe nuclear reactors and also for 4 500 MWe reactors

Koodankulam Nuclear plant likely to start production by December 2009

Close to 95% of work is completed in the upcoming Koodanluam Nuclear project in Tamil Nadu. The plant may begin supplying power from its first two units ( 2 x 100 MW). Of this 1800 MW will be given to TN grids and the remaining to Kerala, Karnataka, Pondicherry and AP. There are also plans to increase the no. of reactors from current 6 to 8.
